So much to think about...

I just finished reading a friends blog. Her heart poured onto the page. She was sobbing while writing I'm sure, I was crying while reading...her blog tells you about their last day in Ethiopia and saying goodbye to their kiddos.

I keep saying the "2 trips to ET" is what is best for the kids. All of the kids in general that are being adopted. Because of the 40 some odd families that ruined it for the rest of us and changed their minds. The government had to think of the children's needs and make sure that it could never happen again. So, again I say it's a good thing. But how miserable it really is going to be. I keep on my mantra, it's best for the kids. But when they are too young, vulnerable, unsure, and scared...that's not good, how will they understand that we will be back for them? We can put ourselves back together, as hard as it would be, but what about our kids and our friends kids? My emotions don't quite fit in my body as it is...that's why poor Mat loses when I can't keep it together anymore (last night). How am I going to stand it when we are the ones to leave...

Our friends lifelong friends Laura and Bryan whom we met at our International Adoption training are the ones who are leaving ET today (this was their 1st trip, blog post above). Also in the group, Wendy and John have been home with their absolutely gorgeous twin girls for 2 months. Kate and Brad have been home with their beautiful son Moses for a week now. Sarah and Eric leave in about a week to meet their sweet girl Baby Lida for the first time. Which means a lot of love. A lot of heartache while saying goodbye until we come back. And...it feels like it's getting closer for us as our our friends go through it all in each different part of the process.

Love to all of our friends who are going through this emotional wonderful and sometimes scary rollercoaster. We think of you often and you are in our hearts.

  1. Love your backpack list :) wanted to send you an email, but I don't see a link to an email address for you.
Saw your blog via adoptionbug .... We have 2 bio boys and are adopting from Kenya, 2 older children, although we are waiting for our referral.

I always pack a change of clothes for myself and my kids, always an extra pair of underwear and extra shirt at least. My son threw up on me once on a plane ... Nice to have a change of clothes. Put it in a gallon ziploc and stuff in the bottom of your backpack. Kids spill stuff, you can lose your bags or get stranded in a connecting city ... It's nice to have the extras if you should need them.
An extra plastic bag .. For soiled items or so many other uses.

My 10 yr old loves Ear Planes for kids ... They insert in the ears and are supposed to help prevent ear pain from the change in pressure.
You can find them at cvs or Walgreens usually. They have them for adults too, make sure you get the kids ones. They come with a little round case.

Just a thought, my older son (10 yr old) has some sensory issues, whenever we take off he likes us to put our hands over his ears and squeeze a little, he likes the pressure during the take off.
It's just something to think about when you have your kids on the plane if they are flying for the first time and if they have issues.

If you have an iPod or similar, that can be entertaining for the kids ... Music can be soothing/entertaining.
I bought a double jack converter on solutions.com ... You put the converter in the earphone hole and it allows two earphones to be plugged in, so 2 people can listen at the same time :)

Just wanted to share a couple travel tips. I hope you find them useful.

I have friends that leave for Ethiopia on Sunday to meet their 8 yr old son, I am SO thrilled for them .... 1st trip for them as well!

Thank you for your blog :)

  2. Thank you Tracy. Congratulations on your upcoming adoption- that's wonderful!

I absolutely love the plastic bags, I think I have those on a list somewhere but glad to double check that one. The change of clothes for us I would have liked to think we would have thought of but I am so glad you mentioned, it is now on my list... I am sure we will think happy thoughts about you when we need that change of clothes midair ;)

The ear inserts, hands over their ears and ipod double earphones are all wonderful. Thank you for sharing such sanity and comfort savers for us!

I also added my email(good idea)- I hope you come back!
